Over 8,000 not-for-profit organisations have received grant funding of £200 million to support them throughout the coronavirus pandemic, new figures have revealed.

The research, published by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, highlights the success of the Coronavirus Community Support Fund (CCSF), which was launched in May in response to the first national lockdown.

According to the report, 8,250 small and medium-sized charities who provide key services and support vulnerable communities affected by Covid-19 have received a share of £200 million.

These include organisations such as Selnet, which received £70,000 to help provide digital devices and internet access to vulnerable adults, and Beacon South Yorkshire, which received £10,000 to provide counselling for unpaid carers who are suffering with their own mental health issues.

Commenting on the initiative, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said the funding will help charities meet increased demand as a result of coronavirus and continue their day-to-day activities supporting those in need.

“Charities are there when we need them the most, and this emergency funding has kept their doors open during the biggest crisis for a generation,” he said.

“Our £200 million Coronavirus Community Support Fund has reached thousands of worthy causes in communities across the country, ensuring they can be there for millions of vulnerable people and families.”

The CCSF forms part of the wider £750 million charities package designed to support the third sector during the coronavirus pandemic. The Government has also pledged additional grant funding to cover the costs of rent for business premises forced to close during the second national lockdown.
